Jack Kornfield "Seven factors of enlightenment"

There is a several types of meditation. The most fundamental difference in meditation is the difference between concentration and insight. A whole class of methods of meditation aims at concentration - fixed focus the mind on a particular object. This can be a breath, mantra, candle flame, etc., with the exception of certain thoughts or impressions. The mind, as energy can be concentrated just as concentrated light energy of the laser. Power density may serve as transcendence, achieving a number of altered states of consciousness, or of different, different from ordinary perception.
These conditions are often enjoyable, because they do not worry and there is tranquility and serenity. In addition, the power of concentration applied to study ourselves, our emotions, to understand what the world of our consciousness and experience.
Exercise awareness - another important set of methods of meditation - not seek to divert the mind from the current experiences and focus it on a single object, causing various states of consciousness. This type of meditation works with existing experience, developing cognition and directing attention to the fact that the moment to moment of our lives: the visible, sound, taste, smell, thoughts and feelings. All this may be the object of meditation, a kind of way to a vision of who we are. During exercise awareness meditators begin to learn how to have adverse conditions and how to work with them mentally and practically. Later, when the consciousness of well-developed, it is possible to gain access to other levels of experience beyond the limits of normal, everyday consciousness.
Meditation, which deals with the service, or returns themselves can also be attributed to the second type, because a careful focus on something in itself is the practice of ministry. It returns itself to what actually is happening at every moment, without trying to change something or put something in the conceptual context.
It exercises the attention of people with the world of work experiences are in the gap between the suppression of feelings, impulses and ideas (they do not step back) and the other extreme - the mandatory implementation in action. Cultivated state of mind that allows us to be open, to see and to fully experience the full range of mental and physical reality, not suppressing our emotions, but not implementing them in action. Coaching attention to what is happening, cultivating awareness, we focus and gain new insights.
I want to present a model that goes back to Buddhist psychology, which may be useful for understanding how the meditation. The model considers the "factors of enlightenment" - the seven qualities of mind, which are listed in the traditional literature as characteristic of his health, or enlightenment. These are supplemented so that at every moment to shape the relationship of man with his experience.
For attentiveness , the central of the seven qualities, followed by two sets of factors that must be maintained in balance.
The first group is made up of energy, research and delight , the second includes factors of concentration, calmness and balance . The first three factors are very active qualities of mind. Energy - the effort to be conscious or aware, study - a very deep examination of our own life experience, and enthusiasm means a state of joy and interest. Need to balance these qualities with concentration, calmness and balance.
Concentration - is unidirectional, the ability to focus the mind is fixed, calm is a kind of inner silence, tacit rather study than lost in thought, balance - it's quiet to maintain balance in a changing environment.
A well-trained attention is the source of all these seven qualities. This is a key factor in meditation, ensuring development and a balance of other factors.Western psychology emphasizes active factors - research and energy - aimed at understanding the man himself. Unfortunately, the West is not enough understanding of the importance of factors of concentration and balance. Without a concentration of mind and balance opportunities are limited and the depth of understanding is low. In the Eastern tradition, on the contrary, difficulties often arise because of the prevalence and concentration of mind, which can cause great feelings of delight, silence of the mind and the state of trance, or dhyana. But underflow investigation and vigorous supervision over how realistic is the case, this practice does not lead to a deeper understanding of themselves and the free enlightenment. To understand yourself completely, it is necessary to combine the concentration of the mind with awareness and research.
Interestingly, this model is not a specifically Sufi, Buddhist, Hindu or psychotherapy. As stated in the "Guide to enlightenment for the lazy" , "for enlightenment care how you reached him." Any good method to develop those qualities of mind and leads them into balance. Methods to ensure a state of rest, clarity and openness will lead to understanding of fundamental spiritual truths. Our true nature is always visible, is the ability to see if the train. If we consider the spiritual practices just as the cultivation of certain mental qualities, one can understand many seemingly different tradition .there is apparently, several levels of human development, has been variously described in different traditions.
The first level of people just realize that they "sleep", it is one of the most important insights. Trying to look at ourselves and be in the present as much as possible throughout the day, people are amazed by how much time they are in a state of "automatic pilot." This insight means the beginning of change, as people begin to see the benefits of a real awakening and strive for a more intensive practice, to a more realistic vision of himself in his own world.
The second level of insight I would call a psycho dynamic or personal revelations. People are starting to see more clearly the patterns of their motivations, and their behavior. A person can, for example, said, "Wow, when I noticed it, I realized that I always tell people something a certain way, because it is constantly seeking approval," or "I always try to look good," or "I always afraid of that, "etc. During meditation, consciousness - just by listening and concentration - there is kind of insight that is very similar to psychotherapy for themselves. Enlightenment and harmony that comes when  confess our structures, contribute to mental equilibrium, ways to reduce the absorption of neuroses and psychological insights are suffer .deeper  levels of practice, which often refers to the eastern classical literature. These are levels of different states of trance, or dhyana - very high absorption or concentration. Such states of concentration have the disadvantage that lead primarily to altered states of consciousness, but not necessarily to the fundamental and lasting changes of personality.
The second area of expertise that a psycho dynamic and personal level - a new insight. This level of awareness brings an understanding of what's inside your mind. A man sees in the mind of desire and motivation, regardless of the content of any particular desire. Going deeper, we find that all of what we are is constantly changing. You can clearly see how the moment-to-moment self dissolves, and this often leads to the area of fear, horror, a kind of internal death. Later this awareness arises spontaneously "releasing" personal motivation, and with it the growing consciousness of love, or "consciousness Bodhisattva." When the stronghold of the self is destroyed, we can see the real connection between us all. Of this there is an immediate feeling of warmth and compassion. Greater understanding leads to various states of the altruistic and perhaps to the highest degree of enlightenment, when we are able to see life as a game in the energy field, which is the whole world.
To understand the wide range of meditation experience, we need to consider the various traditions and techniques just as a means of leading to changes in the field of mental factors. Each method changes the experience of our experience, and from this point of view, it may be that different methods and traditions often shape similar qualities, such as concentration, calm, awareness and balance. In particular, the seven factors of enlightenment can be regarded simply as one of the descriptions of the mind in a state of balance and the ability to more clearly see the nature of the experience.
