Sima Qian "Lao Tzu" (a sort of biography of Lao Tzu)

Lao Tzu was a native of the village Tsyuyzhen, rural Lee County, KY, the kingdom of Chu. His name was Er, the second name - Dan, last name - Lee. He is in charge of the kingdom of Zhou book depository. When Confucius went to Zhou, he asked him about the ritual, and Lao Tzu he replied: "You're talking about those long gone and whose bones are so decayed. remained only their words. noble man, when the time he favors, rides a chariot, not favors, walks with a burden. far as I know, a nice merchant hides deep as if he had all empty. and noble man has immense virtue, and his appearance is like a fool. Avoid pride and a lot of desires , pompous manners and unbridled ambition. All this hurts your body.'s just that I can tell you. " Confucius retired, and said to his disciples: "The Birds, I know, can fly fish, I know I can swim, animals, I know I can run. You can run into a snare to catch flying - to pull the fishing line, flying - to bring down a tethered arrow. How catch a dragon, I know. in the wind and the cloud, he ascends into heaven. Today I was at the Lao Tzu, and he seems like a dragon. " Lao Tzu investigated Tao and virtue, in his teaching was mostly lurk and do not have a name. Lived long in the realm of Zhou, but seeing its decline, and departed. When I reached the gates at the border, its chief Joyful asked him to "write a book for me before absconding." And then Lao Tzu wrote a book in two parts, with more than five thousand words, which explained the meaning of Tao and virtue, and then left. No one knows where he died. There are those who say that the Lao Laytszy also chusets, wrote a book in 15 chapters, which explain the meaning of the Taoist school. Lived, as noted, the same time as Confucius. Lao Tzu probably lived more than 160 years, while others say that more than 200 years, since the study of Tao reached longevity. After 129 years after the death of Confucius, as is clear from the historical record, the main chronicler of the kingdom of Zhou Dan was adopted Qin Prince Syanem and he said: "Qin and Zhou, being first united, divide and connect only after 500 years of separation., 70 years after their connection appears king-hegemon." Some say that Dan is Lao Tzu, others they disagree. Anyone just do not know.Lao Tzu was a noble husband hermit. Son Lao Tzu called Zong. He was the commander Wei principality and was put in the village Duangan. Son Zong - Ju, Wu Zhu son - Gun. Gong was the great grandson of Jia. Jia was in the service of Emperor Han Vendi. In Jia's son - Jie. Jie was the mentor of Prince Tszyaosi Liu An, and settled with his family in the Chi. people in the world, following Lao Tzu reject the Confucian doctrine, but in the Confucian scholars reject Lao Tzu. Is this not mentioned in the lines: "When the road is not the same, do not make plans together?" Li Er - the conversion and repair itself in inaction and quiet.

Additional information

Of the thousands of books written in China, one is likely to read and translated outside the country most often. This thin volume, written over two thousand years ago and known as "Lao Zi" or "Tao Te Ching" ("The classical pathway and its power"), which is the main text, which is based on the philosophy of Taoism. It is a thin book written an unusual and mysterious style which has many interpretations. The basic idea for the Tao, which is usually translated as "the way" or "path." But the general concept of a few vague as "Lao Tzu" begins: "The Tao - a word that you can say - not the eternal Tao, the name that can be named - not the eternal Name." Nevertheless, we can say that about Tao means "nature" or "natural order." Taoism is of the view that the individual does not have to fight against the Tao, and to adapt to it and work with it. Strong desire to obtain or exercise power not so much immoral as stupid and pointless. Tao can not be defeated. Everyone should instead try to live in harmony with it. (Taoists may be noted that the water that is soft, has no form, flows quietly in the low places, subject to no resistance, even the weak force, is nevertheless a destroyer and as the years grind solid rock.) for individuals generally approach the simplicity and naturalness.Violence should be avoided, as well as greed for money or fame. A person should not seek to change the world, but to respect it. For governments also usually wiser course is inactive policy. There are already too many regulations. The initiation of new laws or gross gain of old, usually makes things worse. High prices, ambitious program of government, war - all this against the spirit of Taoist philosophy. According to Chinese legend, the author of "Lao Tzu" was a man named Lao Tzu, who is said to have lived at the same time as Confucius. But Confucius lived in the sixth century BC, and in style and content, as some modern scholars, "Lao Tzu" was written before. The date of creation of the book there is a serious debate. (In the "Lao-tzu" does not contain any mention of the person, place, date, or historical event.) However, it is well-suited 320 BC - error could be plus or minus four years, maybe less. This problem leads to a large number of disputes about the dates of life - and even the existence of the Lao-tzu.Some believe the legend that Lao Tzu lived in the sixth century BC, and, therefore, conclude that he did not write "Lao-tzu." Other scientists believe its just a hero of legend. The point of view adopted by the minority, is to: 1) Lao Tzu was a real person, the author of "Lao-tzu", 2) he lived in the fourth century BC, and 3) the history, like Lao Tzu was a contemporary of Confucius, invented and was fabricated subsequent Taoist philosophers in order to give the man and his book prestige. worth noting that of the early Chinese writers nor Confucius (551-479 BC), no Mo Tzu (V century BC) neither Mencius (371-289 BC), never mentioned any of Lao Tzu, or of the Tao Te Ching, but Chuang Tzu, an important Taoist philosopher who worked around the year 300 BC, constantly remember him. Since the very existence of Lao Tzu's debatable, we should wary of biographical details. But there is a reliable source for the following statements: Lao Tzu was born and lived in northern China. Of his life he was a historian or a manager of official archives may, in Luoyang, the capital of the Zhou Dynasty. Lao Tzu - not the real name of the man, but rather the title, roughly translated as "old master." He was married and had a son named Tsang. Tsang later became commander in the district of Wei. Though Taoism began as a largely secular philosophy of it eventually developed a religious movement. But while the philosophy of Taoism continued to be based primarily on the ideas expressed in "Lao-tzu", Taoist religion soon became cluttered with a lot of supernatural tales and customs that had little to do with the teachings of Lao-Tzu. Assuming that the Lao Tse is the author of "Lao-tzu", its impact on history is enormous. His book is a very small volume (less than six thousand characters in Chinese, that is almost the size of one sheet of newspaper), but contains a lot of food for thought. A number of Taoist philosophers used it as a starting point for their own ideas. west "Lao Tzu" - a much more popular product than of Confucius or any of his followers.Forty published English translations of this book - more than any other, except for the Bible. Within China as a whole is the dominant philosophy, Confucianism, and where there is a clear conflict between the ideas of Lao Tzu and Confucius, the Chinese are the opinion of the latter. However Lao Tzu advocates respect Confucius. Moreover, in many cases, Taoist examination of ideas just grow into the philosophy of Confucius and thus affect millions of people who do not consider themselves Taoists. It seems, Taoism has a significant influence on the development of Chinese Buddhist philosophy, especially Zen Buddhism. Although only a few people call themselves Taoists, there is not a Chinese philosopher, Confucius, except that it would have a broad and profound impact on human thought, as Lao Tzu. Information from the book "100 great men"
